I have worked in high end spas that catered to the rich and famous, high profile athletes, and the movers and shakers in politics. Creating a space that gives the illusion of luxury and relaxation is what we did and what the guests expected. You can create the same atmosphere at home with limited resources while providing the same illusion of luxury and relaxation the high end clients enjoyed.
Creating a relaxing, calm space is important for emotional and physical reasons. It’s also nice to have a respite from your day. A place you can retreat to, something to indulge in in order to help fill your cup is not selfish, it’s necessary. It also doesn’t have to break the bank, take a lot of time, or be complicated. With only TWO items, you can create a relaxing, spa like atmosphere in your home to help improve your health and stay within anyone’s budget!
What are the two items? Essential oils and water. Yep, that’s it. Now, I have to say, when you use essential oils, you need to make sure you are using high quality essential oils. I prefer doTERRA because I trust their testing standards, quality, and mission in the health community.* Find what works best for you, but please do research on the company and oils before you put them on and especially in your body. Ok, back to using water and oils to create a spa in your home.

Use Essential Oils in Your Drinking Water.
We all need to drink more water throughout the day. Drinking enough water helps our body and brain function smoothly. Adding oils to your water is not only a spa trick, but it has health benefits! There are many options when it comes to what essential oil you would like to use, however, I love using lemon essential oil in my water. It is so refreshing, cleansing, and it’s only $10 a bottle! With 250 drops, it comes out to be .04 a drop and one drop is all you need. Get a little fancy and add some fresh lemons or cucumbers. Start each morning with some spa water or drink some during your lunch break for a healthy and indulgent change.
2. Diffuse Essential Oils in a Diffuser
Did you know that scents and memories are processed in the same part of your brain? So, when you say, “that smell reminds me of my grandma/childhood/old home/etc” it really is! By using a diffuser in your home, you can create a space that brings good memories and sense of calm and relaxation. Lavender, Cedarwood, and even Lemongrass are wonderful options. When people come into the spa, we want to set the mood, have them feel comfortable the minute they walk into the spa area. You can do the same for yourself and your family by diffusing in your home. Add a couple of drops of Lemongrass in the morning (.04 per drop) and spend 5 minutes meditating or taking deep breaths to prepare you for your day and then diffuse Lavender (.09 per drop) at night to help support sleep and a restful night.
3. Add Essential Oil to Your Shower
We got more compliments at our spa for having a spray bottle of Eucalyptus oil to spray into the Sauna and Steam Room. Do this at home! Run a really hot shower until it starts steaming and add a few drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil (.07 per drop) on the floor of your shower and enjoy! Open up your sinuses and chest, support deep breathing, and invigoration for your day. Spend a few more minutes on your morning routine enjoying the “steam room.”
4. Foot Soaks with Essential Oils
You don’t need a fancy tub with jets to soak your feet. We used large wash bins for our foot soaks! Foot soaks are a super popular add on option at spas and can cost upwards of $50! This does take a bit more planning and energy, but doesn’t take up any more space and can be the most relaxing and beneficial. Our feet do so much for us every day all day. They are our roots, our foundation, and support us our entire lives. Keeping our feet healthy and rested can affect our entire body’s health. I love soaking my feet in Peppermint Essential Oil. Peppermint is great for odor, inflammation, invigoration, and has a nice cooling/tingling feeling that is really nice on those hot summer days. One drop (.09 per drop) in a large container of warm water is plenty. You can add Epsom salt, but it’s not needed, if you want to cut down on cost or going to the store.
5. Foot Soak Hack:
If you don’t have a large tub, warm up two damp hand towels in the microwave that have had some peppermint oil dropped on them. Wrap around your feet and sit for 10 minutes while reading your favorite magazine, book, getting lost in Facebook, or whatever brings you joy.
( Whenever you use essential oils, make sure to use glass or non porous containers.)
By using only water and essential oils, you can create a relaxing, calming, spa like environment in your home, while not breaking the bank. Experience the luxury of a high end spa for way less, indulge in the health benefits of essential oils, and create a space in your home to help support your relaxation and comfort!
